Thank you so much for posting my little talk Tom. I’m looking forward to listening to more of your podcasts. What a great idea to organize podcasts! It was lovely to hear about 50/90 as well :) I forgot to mention that my piano piece was called “Having Fun” and it was a first composition I’ve composed for 50/90.

    Hey nice podcast!

I’d be interested more re: the clever key change trick. Did you know which key you wanted to get into and how you were moving there?!?!

My understanding of circle of fifths et.c is a little shaky.

I’d love to contribute a pocast about songwriting.. not that I’m an expert by ANY means at all. But I’ve learnt some helpful things.

    Thanks

    Ros

    Hi Rose,

If you want to contribute, please do! I don’t think any of us would claim to be experts, and it’s always good to hear the perspective of other songwriters.

The key change that Nadia used is quite a common one – just up a tone. So she started in Bb, then moved up to C. That’s the sort of key change you get in a lot of pop songs, but it certainly isn’t the only option. Classical music often moves up a fifth or fourth.

Changing to the relative minor if you’re in a major key (or major if you’re in a minor key) is another effective option.

The best thing to do is to try things out and see what sounds good!

Glad you like it, Matt :) Fancy contributing? I’m sure my readers would love to hear some of your ideas. Something on the joys of live looping would go down well…
